Sedum Roofs

What is a Living Roof?

November 25, 2021

A living roof quite simply means a roof that has plants growing on it! They are eco-friendly, insulating and a striking alternative to traditional styles. Not only do they look more attractive than traditional shingles, but they are also a great way to encourage biodiversity.

There is something about a green roof that makes a building feel more comfortable. You can enjoy watching your roof thrive, while appreciating the benefits of a cooler home and fresher air.

There are 3 types of green roofing:

1. Extensive

This sort of roof is designed to require minimal maintenance and less structural support. They are lightweight due to consisting of low-level vegetation, a few centimetres tall like moss, sedum or grass. This requires no irrigation other than on installation and ideal for roofs that are pitched and difficult to access.

2. Intensive

An intensive green roof is another name for rooftop gardens. They require irrigation systems for maintenance and extra structural support. A deep growing medium is used which allows the use of shrubs, trees and recreational areas with walkways. Due to this they work best on fat roofs, since access is needed to the actual plants and ideal for commercial or apartment buildings. The roof needs to be quite strong to hold the additional weight.

3. Brown Roofs

Brown Roofs are generally constructed using material from around the site of the roof and are an ecological alternative to conventional surface protection such as gravel or pavers. They are lightweight and have a shallow build-up height which can be left to seed naturally or scattered with a seed mix.
