Electricity Bill

Electricity through the roof? Resolve it now!

January 10, 2022

You’ve probably been aware of solar power for years. You may even have some homes near where you live that have solar but is solar something you should consider?

Opting for a solar panel system on your property is one of the best things you can do for the climate, your energy bills and your energy efficiency rating. However, one of the first questions for any homeowner who is thinking about having solar panels installed is whether their roof is suitable for such an installation. Below are 5 key factors which play a crucial role in solar panel eligibility:

  1. Roof Orientation

In the UK, the best orientation for a solar panel system is a south-facing roof where it catches the maximum amount of sunshine throughout the day. Although, you can still generate a decent amount of electricity by a roof that faces South East or South West but a North facing roof wouldn’t get enough sunlight to justify the expense.

  1. Roof Pitch

The optimum roof angle for a solar panel system in the UK is 35-40 degrees but any roof with a pitch outside that range will only see a small drop off in generation. On flat roofs, panels are installed at a 10-degree angle to maximise the use of space and shading.

  1. Roof Condition

It is important that the condition of the roof is assessed properly by certified installers. Solar panels can be expensive to remove, so if your current roof isn’t prepared to last for 20 years or more then it would be wise to make plans for a roof replacement before you have a solar system installed.

  1. Roof Shading

Solar systems can still generate power if there are objects causing shade; however, the amount of electricity generated will be greatly diminished. If your roof has lots of shadows cast upon it for extended periods of time, then it might be best to consider other solar options available.

  1. Roof Material

Many people wonder whether solar systems hurt their roof? Fortunately, most roofing materials can accommodate a solar panel installation without harming the roof itself. In general, most roof materials are suitable apart from 3 that are excluded:

  • Roofs containing asbestos: mainly due to the safety hazards
  • Thatch roofs: increases the fire risk
  • Glass roofs: not strong enough to hold the PV system.
